How to Turn UGC Creators Into Affiliates

To turn UGC creators into affiliates, pay for one video that they also post, measure whether their audience buys from it, and offer commission only to the creators who prove they can sell.

A commission link handed to every creator up front skips the one step that tells you who deserves it.

So treat the gig as a paid trial, and the commission as the reward for passing it.

Affilitrak is built around that order: you order UGC videos and sponsored posts, and once a creator delivers, you can give them a referral link or coupon code and track their sales like any other affiliate.

Why turn UGC creators into affiliates?

  • They already know the product: a creator who has filmed your product has handled it, written a script around it and seen which angle landed, so their first post as an affiliate starts from real material rather than a blank page.
  • Cold recruits rarely sell: across 8,687 affiliates recruited by Shopify stores on Affilitrak, about 16% ever made a sale in our data. That is affiliate data rather than a measurement of creators, but it is the odds you accept every time you recruit someone you have never seen sell.
  • A proven creator has already beaten those odds: if their post moved orders, you watched it happen on your own store, before you paid them a cent of commission.
  • One seller tends to carry a program: in stores with two or more selling affiliates, the top one brings in a median 54.5% of referred orders, across 171 stores, so one creator who sells is worth more than a long list who might.

Personally, I think a creator whose audience has already bought from them is the cheapest affiliate you will ever recruit, because the trial is already paid for.

Which creators to convert

  • Only creators whose post went out: a video-only gig tells you how well someone films, not whether anyone listens to them. A gig that includes a post is open only to creators with at least 1,000 followers on a main TikTok, Instagram, Facebook or YouTube account, so it is the gig that tests an audience.
  • The ones whose code moved orders: put a discount code unique to that creator in the brief, and count the orders on it in Shopify. Views and likes tell you the post was seen, and only orders tell you the audience buys, which is the method in our guide on whether a creator's audience buys.
  • The ones who were easy to work with: a creator who delivered on time and handled a revision well will be easier to run as an affiliate too.

The trade-off to know first

On Affilitrak, the UGC gig terms say a creator who is already your approved affiliate cannot take your gigs.

So when you convert a creator, their paid video work for you ends, and the decision deserves a moment of thought rather than a reflex.

  • Convert the creators you value for their audience: their posts move orders, and commission rewards exactly that.
  • Keep commissioning video from the creators you value for their filming: an excellent producer with a small or quiet audience earns you more as a source of ads than as an affiliate.

If a creator is strong at both, I would keep them on gigs until you need their audience more than their footage, because once they are your affiliate, the gigs stop.

How to turn a UGC creator into an affiliate

  1. Run a video plus post gig with a unique code: on Affilitrak this costs $225 for a creator with 1k to 10k followers or $400 for 10k+, and the post has to carry #ad and stay up for at least 30 days. Create a discount code for that creator alone and require it in the brief.
  2. Check the orders after 30 days: look up the orders on that creator's code in Shopify. Thirty days is how long the post has to stay up, so that is the window you are judging.
  3. Invite the creators whose code sold: send a short, specific invitation, like the one below.
  4. Set their rate and their code: approve them as an affiliate and give them their own referral link or coupon code, so every sale they drive from now on is tracked to them.
  5. Agree the payout schedule up front: tell them the threshold and how often they are paid, before their first sale rather than after it.

"Thanks again for the video. Your code brought in X orders in its first month, so your audience clearly trusts you on this product. Would you like to join our affiliate program? You'd earn Y% on every sale through your own link and code, paid by PayPal once your balance reaches $Z. I'd also love to send you our next product so you can feature it with your affiliate link."

What commission to offer

The median commission rate across 149 Shopify programs is 10%. Apparel and food and drink sit on that median. In our commission rates by industry breakdown, beauty is the one clear step up, to 15%. Health's median is also 15%, but that sample is too small to treat as a clear difference from 10%.

A proven creator may deserve more, but for a specific reason.

Across 471 programs in our data, commission rate showed no correlation with performance, so a higher rate will not make an average creator sell more.

What a higher rate can do is keep a creator who has already shown they sell, so I would treat paying above the median as a retention decision for a proven seller rather than a lever to pull for everyone.

A tiered rate does the same job more cheaply: start at your normal rate and step it up once the creator passes a sales threshold you set.

How this works on Affilitrak

  • Gigs come first: you order a UGC video or a video plus post, creators apply, and you choose who films.
  • Then a link or a code: each creator you invite gets their own tracked link or code, and you see sales per creator alongside the rest of your program.
  • Commission rules to match: flat, tiered and multi-level commissions, so a proven creator can start on a higher tier or work up to one.
  • Payouts without chasing: scheduled PayPal payouts go out when an affiliate hits your threshold.
  • The sample does not count: the free order you ship for a gig is not an affiliate sale, so nobody earns commission on their own sample.

The affiliate app itself is free, with no usage caps, for creators you invite yourself, because Affilitrak charges for creator content rather than for running that program. Affiliates the marketplace sends you still carry a 20% fee on their commission, and this path does not use the marketplace.

Affilitrak brings creators to you and tracks what they sell, but it does not vet their audience for you or guarantee that a post will sell.

Conclusion

Do not hand every creator a commission link: let one paid video show you whose audience buys, and save the link for them.

The gig is the paid trial and the code is the test, so commission goes only to the creators who pass.

Convert the creators whose posts sell, keep paying for video from the ones whose strength is filming, and remember that the move ends their gigs with you.
